>>>OL' DIRTY BASTARD-THE TRIALS & TRIBULATIONS OF RUSSELL JONES

Let me pick an adjective that best describes Ol' Dirty Bastard's style: easy... all-balls-out-fucking-crazy. I've been waiting some timenow for Dirt McGirt's 'Trials and Tribulations' to be released. Since 'Nigga Please' was such a great album, I was curious how his new effort would compare. After listening to it a first time, two things occured to me. One, how west coast rap the album sounds. Is this Big Baby Jesus or Too Short? Second, the use of recycled lyrics is excessive. In fact, the track 'Dogged Out' is 'Got Your Money' with a different beat and 'C'mon' is a shortened remix of 'Baby, C'mon' from his first album. After a second listen, some tracks emerged as noteworthy. 'Dirty and Stinkin' is a great track even if ICP does appear on it. It reminds of something that could have been on 'Nigga Please'. So does 'Here Comes the Judge'. It has that brilliant unprofessionalism ODB creates so well. 'Lintballz' features Sunz Of Man & Brooklyn Zoo. The rhymes are constructed well and flows well over the beat produced by . Plus, how cool is a song called Lintballz!?!
Ol' Dirt Dog was incarcerated during the production of this album, and for some reason thats all I can think about when listening. On tracks like Anybody(Remix) and Reunited, the beats have an un-ODB'ish seriousness behind them. A Vibe Reporter recently interviewed and said he was in a sorry state. All drugged up and paranoid i guess. Plus, I don't think you can fully concentrate and contribute to an album when you're busy digging a tunnel behind a Miss Raquel Welshe's poster.
So, this album has some bright spots, but the under-production and lack of "something new" hinders this album from being real good. And the re-use of lyrics is looked down upon here in the local Vermillion hip-hop scene. But, how else can you follow up something like 'Nigga Please'? Please.
